Edin Dzeko could be just what Man City are looking for. Photo: caughtoffside |
If we are to believe recent reports, Edin Dzeko will be a Man City player within 24 hours in a deal worth around £27m; but what will he bring to Man City in a bid to try and reignite the perhaps fading title hopes? Despite rumors of David Suarez heading to Man Utd, I am more excited about the far more likely transfer on the other side of Manchester. I for one have not written Man City out of this season's title race; and I think that Edin Dzeko could be the solution to what Man City are lacking.
Alex Ferguson has already suggested (or even stated) that Man Utd will not be spending money in January. Man City's financial clout could see a spending spree that could really bring them back into the race with a consistent and so far unbeaten Man Utd side.
Not many media outlets so far have really assessed the Bosnian's credentials as a Premier League Striker, however with a record like the 24 year old has does not need an introduction. 66 goals in only 111 appearances for Wolfsburg has seen the 6ft3 Striker attract interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs. Similarly, 17 goals in 31 international boosts his credentials as a top quality goal threat. Most of us will have seen Man City's performance against Arsenal; and most of us would agree that City's tactics were perhaps negative considering the aspirations of the club this season. I do sympathise with Roberto Mancini and City fans alike, who may feel the assessment of their performance at the Emirates Stadium was a little rash. Given the fixture pile-up and the fact that City were traveling to the Emirates I do not think 0-0 was a disaster! I think with a player like Dzeko in the fold however, Man City could gain what they have been missing... a world class front two.
Mario Balotelli has felt it necessary to 'toot his own horn' with little grounds to do so. Edin Dzeko (despite being 3 years senior to Balotelli) I think would bring a great deal more to Man City than the temperamental young Italian has already. I do not often value the opinion of former England manager Steve McClaren, but having managed Dzeko at Wolfsburg he may have some grounds to suggest what the player is about. I echo his views when he suggested that the Bosnian would be an adequate strike partner to Carlos Tevez. He brings height, power, pace, ability with both feet and most importantly goals! I think coupled with the combative and tireless work ethic of Tevez, City could be looking at a very threatening front two.
Undoubtedly, Man City are playing well, but what we saw on Wednesday night at the Emirates was not the style of play we would expect to see from a side looking to breach the Top 3 in the Premier League. Emmanuel Adebayor brings nothing to Man City and is likely to be on his way in January. Whilst City enjoy playing David Silva and James Milner wide of Carlos Tevez I don't think its the way to success. The deal for Dzeko will be a huge boost for City, I just hope he is used in a way that will allow him to show what he is really about...
